About the Trees & Farming

Q1. How long does it take for a Rhus succedanea tree to mature and produce usable resin?

A: Typically, a Rhus succedanea tree takes about 3 years to mature enough for the first resin harvest. The tree reaches its prime harvesting period between 3–8 years of age. Older trees produce less resin but often yield higher-quality sap.

Q2. What climate and soil conditions are best for growing these trees?

A: Lacquer trees thrive in humid subtropical climates with well-distributed rainfall. They prefer fertile, well-drained soil on sloping hillsides. Cooler upland areas of Northern Vietnam, such as Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang,... provide ideal conditions.

Q3. How are the trees planted and spaced for optimal growth?

A: Trees are usually planted at a spacing of 1.5–2 meters. On average, about 150–200 trees are planted per 360m² to ensure balanced sunlight and root development.

Q4. What type of care or maintenance do the trees require throughout the year?

A: Lacquer trees need minimal intervention but benefit from seasonal organic fertilization, especially during the first year. Weed control and proper soil aeration help root growth. Chemical fertilizers are avoided, as they may negatively affect resin quality.

Q5. Are there any common diseases or pests that affect lacquer trees, and how are they handled?

A: The most common threats are fungal infections, leaf-eating insects, and occasional trunk borers. Farmers traditionally rely on manual removal, organic repellents, and avoiding excessive moisture to prevent disease outbreaks.

Harvesting Process

Q6. What is the traditional method for tapping and collecting the resin?

A: Farmers make shallow V-shaped cuts into the tree bark using a special curved knife. The resin naturally oozes out and is collected in containers placed beneath the cut. Cuts are made early in the morning and must be precisely angled to avoid damaging the tree.

Q7. During which months or seasons is the resin harvested?

A: Vietnam resin is typically harvested every time in a year.

Resin Quality & Processing

Q8. How do you identify high-quality resin versus lower-quality resin?

A: High-quality raw lacquer has a milky white to ivory color with a slight red tint, smooth texture, moderate viscosity, and a slightly sour scent. It hardens into a clear, flexible, and glossy film. In contrast, poor-quality resin may appear yellowish or muddy, have low laccol content, or include debris or water.

Q9. Are there any specific challenges in maintaining the purity or quality of the raw lacquer?

A: Yes. Exposure to air, improper storage, and contamination with dust, water, or other oils can degrade resin quality. Additionally, some suppliers may mix lower-grade resins, resin waters, or other ingredients to increase volume. That's why sourcing from experienced producers with proper filtering and fermentation methods is essential to maintain consistent quality.

Q10. Is lacquer eco-friendly, non-toxic, and food-safe?

A: Yes. Vietnamese lacquer is a natural plant-based resin derived from Rhus succedanea. Once fully cured, it becomes chemically inert, non-toxic, and safe for food contact. It contains no synthetic additives, making it an eco-friendly alternative to plastic-based coatings. However, like many natural substances, it must be applied and cured properly to ensure its food-safe qualities.

Q11. What are the most common uses of lacquer?

A: Lacquer is widely used in traditional arts and crafts, including lacquerware (bowls, trays, boxes), furniture finishing, musical instruments, sculptures, and decorative wall panels. Its durability, waterproof finish, and deep, glossy appearance make it ideal for functional items as well as fine art.

Q12. Is lacquer waterproof?

A: Yes. Once cured, lacquer forms a sealed, waterproof film that protects surfaces from moisture and humidity. It has traditionally been used to coat bowls, chopsticks, religious objects, and even small boats, making it a reliable finish for both indoor and semi-outdoor use.

Q13. How do you maintain a lacquer finish?

A: To preserve lacquer surfaces, use a soft cloth for cleaning, avoid direct sunlight or high heat, and do not use abrasive cleaners. Regular gentle polishing can help maintain its natural sheen. Proper care ensures lacquer items remain beautiful and can last for generations.

Q14. Is lacquer a good finish for wood furniture?

A: Absolutely. Lacquer provides a smooth, glossy, and protective coating for wooden furniture. It enhances the wood’s natural grain and offers durability with visual depth. It’s especially suited for indoor furniture, though care should be taken to avoid sharp impacts and prolonged exposure to water.

Q15. Why is our lacquer better than other products on the market or buying directly from farmers?

A: While raw lacquer can be sourced from various sellers and farmers, not all lacquer is created equal. Here’s why ours stands out:

✅ Consistent Quality: We have spent time researching, meeting, and working closely with plantations and farmers whose product quality we personally vouch for. Our trusted partners apply strict selection and post-harvest fermentation protocols to ensure purity and proper laccol content.

✅ No Adulteration: Many suppliers dilute high-grade red lacquer with lower-grade white or “mỡ gà” lacquer, water or engine oil to increase volume. Our products are controlled, lab-tested, filtered, and never mixed.

✅ Export-Grade Standards: Our products meet international export quality standards and are already being shipped to markets around the world. We currently export to Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea. In addition, our raw lacquer is also purchased directly at the farm by traders to export to China, reflecting the strong demand and trusted quality of our materials.

✅ Stable Supply & Logistics: Direct-from-farm purchases may suffer from seasonal shortages, inconsistent quality, and lack of proper storage. We offer reliable volume, packaging, and international shipment support.
